General household insects

A general insect problem is often a moisture problem underneath. Silverfish, sowbugs, centipedes and earwigs all favour damp, dark places: basements, bathrooms, crawl spaces, storage boxes and the ground immediately around a foundation. Fleas are different — they arrive with pets or wildlife and establish in carpets, upholstery and pet resting areas.

Silverfish

Silverfish are wingless, fast-moving and active at night. They feed on starches and paper products, which is why they turn up in bathrooms, basements, bookshelves and stored cardboard. High humidity is what keeps a population going.

Fleas

Adult fleas are only part of the population. Eggs, larvae and pupae develop in carpet fibres, floor gaps, upholstery and pet bedding, and the pupal stage can remain dormant for a long period before emerging.
