Mosquitoes and ticks
Mosquitoes rest during the day in shaded, humid vegetation and become active around dusk. They breed in standing water, and a very small amount is enough — a plant saucer, a clogged gutter, a tarp fold, an unused container. Ticks behave differently: they wait on tall grass and low vegetation, particularly along the edge where a lawn meets longer grass, leaf litter or bush.
Reducing pressure on your own property
Keeping grass short, clearing leaf litter and yard debris, trimming back shrubs and overgrown vegetation, and emptying anything holding standing water all reduce the habitat both pests depend on.
