Ants
The ants you see indoors are foraging workers. The colony they belong to is usually somewhere else — in a wall void, under a slab, in damp structural wood or outside near the foundation — which is why removing the visible ants changes very little on its own.
Carpenter ants
Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They excavate galleries in it to nest, and they strongly prefer wood that is already damp or damaged: a deck ledger, a window frame under a leaking gutter, a shed sill, or framing near a plumbing leak. Over time those galleries weaken the wood they run through. Coarse sawdust-like shavings below a beam or trim is a common sign.
Odorous house ants
Odorous house ants form large colonies with more than one queen and travel in well-defined trails to food and moisture. They give off a distinct smell when crushed, which is where the name comes from.
